Can


El verb can té diferents significats. Pot significar:
 
- poder = tenir l'habilitat o la possibilitat de fer alguna cosa.
  You can meet very friendly people on the Internet.
(A Internet pots conèixer gent molt interessant.)
 
- saber = tenir els coneixements per fer alguna cosa.
  Can you send an e-mail? (Saps enviar un e-mail?)
El verb can té la mateixa forma per a totes les persones, inclosa la tercera del singular.
  He can drive. (Ell sap conduir.)
A la negació se li afegeix not, convertint-la en can't o cannot, (NO can not)
  We cannot speak Chinese. (No sabem parlar xinès.)
  My father can't play the piano. (El meu pare no sap tocar el piano.)
A les preguntes, can (o can't) es col·loca abans del subjecte.
  Can he speak French? (Sap parlar francès?)
  Can't you hear me? (No em sents?)
