Superfoods are very popular lately... the need for a better nutrition and better health has lead many peope to adopt certain eating and drinking habits which seem healthier. Read the following text describing superfoods and do the activities that follow.
Imagine a superfood -- not a drug -- powerful enough to help you lower your cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease and cancer, and put you in a better mood. Guess what? These life-altering superfoods are available right now in your local supermarket.
"The effect that diet can have on how you feel today and in the future is astounding," says nutritionist Elizabeth Somer, author of Nutrition for a Healthy Pregnancy, and The Essential Guide to Vitamins and Minerals.
"Even people who are healthy can make a few tweaks and the impact will be amazing," Somer says. "I'd say that 50% to 70% of suffering could be eliminated by what people eat and how they move: heart disease, diabetes, cancer, hypertension can all be impacted."
All foods coined "super foods" are named as such because they go beyond basic nutrition and promote superior health in some way. They are generally whole , natural foods, but fall into a spectrum of food categories. Most super foods are fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, healthy fat, meat, poultry or fish. The foods are unprocessed and may be organically produced. Most often, super foods are fresh, though frozen and canned varieties may be available at some grocery stores. Popular super foods include nuts such as almonds and walnuts, which provide healthy fat as well as protein and fiber. Almonds also have more calcium than other nuts, and one serving of almonds offers half the body's vitamin E requirement. Fruits that make the super foods list include berries . Blueberries prevent urinary tract infections and are rich in vitamin C and fiber. Salmon is a popular super food for its healthy omega-3 fat content. Broccoli is often listed for its dense amount of nutrients, including antioxidants that can reduce risk for multiple diseases such as diabetes and some forms of cancer. Sweet potatoes offer valuable amounts of fiber; vitamins B-6, C and E; folate and potassium. Wheat germ is a common super food, known for its concentrated amounts of niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin E, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc. It also contains protein, fiber and some fat.
In spite of these specific benefits that each superfood contains, you don't need specific foods for specific ailments. A healthy diet incorporating a variety of superfoods will help you maintain your weight, fight disease, and live longer. One thing they all have in common: "Every superfood is going to be a 'real' (unprocessed) food," Somer points out. "You don't find fortified potato chips in the superfood category."
